about

Science fiction writer and visionary Philip K. Dick once stated that the ultimate in paranoia would be that things are turning in on you.
Not my boss, but my boss’s phone is plotting against me. Dick died in 1982, the same year that Blade Runner came out, the movie based on his novel 'Do Androids Dreams of Electric Sheep?' that would eventually turn him into a cult hero. But that’s beside the point. What matters is that Philip K. Dick made his statement long before every new phone update sends us to a state of frenzy.

Michel Banabila, not born yesterday, must have intuitively understood Dick’s notion a long long time ago. In a sense he’s a classical electronic composer, if there is such a thing, who has a knack for the most sweeping melodies and can branch out in any style that might fit his ideas. A versatile musician, no doubt, but at the core of his art lies a slight distrust of things as they are, a certain doubt that gives his music no uncertain edge. It’s that edge that makes Banabila’s music not just good, but extraordinary.

Tapu Records is Banabila’s very own label, taking its name from his cat, and also indicating a Polynesian traditional concept denoting something holy or sacred. The Tapu Sampler 2016 you hold in your hands collects mostly his recent tracks, some conceived with others, some solo. The sheer range of music alone is impressive. The introvert and intense mixture of viola (played by Oene van Geel) and sinus tones that make up ‘Sinus en Snaar’ sits uneasily next to the occasionally frantic ‘Jump Cuts’, recorded with drummer Joost Kroon, and the breezy ‘Narita’, performed with Machinefabriek (Rutger Zuydervelt). However, all of them have something essential in common: they conjure up strong images. This is music you can almost SEE.

A recurring element in the music of Michel Banabila is still the voice, no surprise for long time admirers who remember the infamous VoizNoiz series. It’s in the YouTube-samples that give ‘Take Me There’ its eerie feeling, in ‘In Other Words’ where he uses fragments of text to create a new language, in ‘E.T.’, in which Banabila treated his own voice into some otherworldly sound, a piece that featured recently in a mix by renowned French DJ Rone, next to tracks by Autechre and Caribou. In his urge to always seek new ways Michel Banabila’s music seems constantly out of place when it is just as much of the times, whereof this collection is living proof.

reviews / quotes:

VITAL WEEKLY 1011:
In these economic hard times it becomes increasingly difficult to run a proper label, one that actually gets stuff pressed on black plates or shiny discs. This means that Banabila has to put an end to his Tapu Records label and will only exist in the digital domain. As a farewell there is this double CD, a kind of 'best of' from Tapu Records, showcasing Banabila's many musical interests.
Ever since he released his first LP, 'Marilli', in 1983, he is a on a constant exploration of musical textures: ambient, ethnic, electronic, noise. Everything that Banabila does is part of this; there is wild drumming, beautiful serene and intimate textures, modular synths, the trumpet of Eric Vloeimans, film soundtrack like music and all of that;
it is all part of this 140-minute collection. For all those people, who are about to discover Banabila's music, this is a treasure trove of Banabila's musical development in the last ten years. (FdW)

NOWAMUZYKA:
Dyskografia Banabily liczy obecnie ponad kilkadziesiąt pozycji. W 2005 roku artysta powołał do życia własny label Tapu Records.
Całość otwiera znakomity utwór „Take Me There” pochodzący z ubiegłorocznej EP-ki „Jump Cuts”(tutaj o niej pisałem).
Wciągający ambient w „In Other Words (webSDR mix)” oryginalnie pochodzi z płyty „In Other Words” (2011), zaś „E.T.” „I Won’t Play Your Game” łączy w sobie elektroniczny puls, poszatkowaną rytmikę i soundtrackowy klimat.

NORMAN RECORDS:
Tapu is the label of Michel Banabila, featuring the music of Michel Banabila and sometimes others, as this sampler will reveal. On this 2CD set, an impressive and extensive array of music can be heard, featuring a plethora of musicians at the forefront; this is not just the Banabila show. It makes sense then that Banabila has been composing since the early 80s, the mastery of instrumentation and production on this betraying years of musical messing. Over the course of the CDs you’ll hear some kinda new age, thematic mood sounds with an interesting fragmented ambience that hangs in the background, leaving room for other instruments such as the viola (played by Oene van Geel), drums, and various electronics (from Machinefabriek) to sit over it all. ‘Jump Cuts’ is interspersed with the sound of electroacoustic animal cries while a beat thuds on confrontationally. ‘Narita’ sounds like it could be from a climactic moment in a Danny Boyle film, just with some glitches flitting about and none of the Hollywood bollocks. Distorted tone chunks drift across the earspace while something gentle twinkles in the distance, fading out and leaving quite an impression. OK so I’ve spent a while on this so don’t have time to get to disc 2, but it’s some tasty stuff indeed. (Laurie)

SUBJECTIVISTEN:

(Pavel Zelinka - RadioWave)
