about

Ever since he released his music in the early '80s, Michel Banabila has been hard to pinpoint to a specific genre or style. His musical output includes jazz, experimental cut-up electronics, world music (especially influenced by the Fourth World music as developed by Jon Hassell), New Age, eclectic pop tunes, music for dance or other stage projects, and soundtracks for TV productions. Wah-Wah Whispers focuses on Banabila's more recent output. It is a collection of works showcasing many facets of his music: a journey visiting the minimal and cinematic sample scape in the opener Take Me There, a robotic reggae-like rhythm (Tic Tac), contemplative ambient / fourth world scenes evolving into a downright funky beat (Hidden Story), the synth version of Secunde, and more. The album ends with a kaleidoscope of atmospheres gradually building up to a noise climax in Narita (the only collaboration track on the album, with Rutger Zuydervelt / Machinefabriek).

Reviews / quotes:

JUNO DAILY:
"With depth and diversity at every turn, at the very least this concise collection hints at the many styles of Banabila that lie in wait of intrepid explorers" (OW)

SQUIDCO:
A collection of compositions drawn from recent works by Michel Banabila, the composer performing alongside artists Rutger Zuydervelt, Yuko Parris, Cok Van Vuuren and All'n4tural, showcasing his flexibility in developing a variety of works that include cinematic sweeps, ambient/fourth world, sound and noise, and rhythm-based and synthetic.

HHV MAG:

VITAL WEEKLY 1276:
"The perfect introduction to this fantastic composer's recent output" (FdW)

LIBERO BLOG:
Tutto è preciso in queste canzoni.

Twórczość Michela to niesamowicie szerokie spektrum wpływów i gatunków, miał etapy fascynacji jazzem, eksperymentalną cut-upową elektroniką, muzyką świata (w szczególności Czwartym Światem Jona Hassella), new age’em czy nawet eklektycznym popem.
W 2016 roku opisałem inną składankę opublikowaną przez ten niemiecki label, czyli Early Works / Things popping up from the past, gdzie wydawcy zebrali nagrania Banabili z lat 80.
Wah-Wah Whispers otwiera dobrze mi znany fragment Take Me There (oryginalnie pojawił się na EP-ce Jump Cuts – recenzja). Ujmująco wypadają Branches (Always There / 2020) i Out Of Sync (Just Above The Surface / 2018) przypominające nastrojem wydawnictwo mikrokolektywu Cloud Ensemble (recenzja) tworzonego m.in. przez Banabilę i Grzegorza Bojanka.
Hidden Story oscyluję zaś bliżej płyt Davida Sylviana, szczególnie słychać tu echa Dead Bees on a Cake.

KEYS AND CHORDS:
(Marino Serdons)

On TWITTER:
My favourite discovery for Spring - and a reminder to never ignore anything on Bureau B - is Dutch composer/producer Michel Banabila. Liminal is an overused word but it fits his diverse discography perfectly. (Phil Bloomfield).
